Babine
While the Kispiox has the largest average-sized steelhead in the world, the Babine is blessed with both large steelhead and robust returns. As a result, the Babine has more 20- and 30-pound steelhead than any other river in the world.
The Babine flows from one of the largest lakes in British Columbia and is fed by two major glacial tributaries before it enters the Skeena upstream of the Kispiox and downstream of the Sustut.
The Babine River is home to some of the largest steelhead in the world, and offers a remote, scenic wilderness location.
The Babine River is home to B.C.'s largest run of sockeye salmon. Decaying salmon flesh supercharges the system, so there is plant life in the water and insects. In the summer, you can catch rising trout on dry flies. Other creatures feed on the salmon as well. If you enjoy sharing the water with grizzly bears (especially on the upper river) and bald eagles, the Babine is the place for you.
There are three lodges on this river. Babine Norlakes Lodge (250-847-6160) and Babine Steelhead Lodge (250-577-3108) are on the upper river close to the lake where the water is sometimes clearer when tributaries become dirty from heavy rain or glacial runoff. Silver Hilton Lodge (415-897-4997), farther downstream, is more isolated and sometimes has more fish earlier in the season.
The Babine is a wilderness river with difficult access and is not a do-it-yourself destination. You can reach the outflow of the lake or the lower end of the river via logging roads, but the dense underbrush, slippery footing in the river, and always-present grizzly bears make it difficult to make your way downstream.
