The town of Green Cove on the upper Tellico, 17 miles from Tellico Plains, has the Green Cove Motel and Trailer Camp, (423) 253-2069.
The U.S. Forest Service maintains campsites in the Cherokee National Forest and at the Holly Flats Campground on the banks of the Bald River. Call the Cherokee National Forest, (423) 253-2520, for camping information and road conditions.
A good topographical map can help you find remote backcountry waters. The DeLorme Mapping Company, (800) 452-5931, publishes the Tennessee Atlas and Gazetteer, which includes the North Carolina Tellico drainage. In USGS maps, you want the following quadrants: Big Junction, TN-NC; and Bald River Falls, TN-NC.
Tellico Basin Fly Shops
The Green Cove Motel and Trailer Camp, (423) 253-2069, has a selection of local favorites and specialties, and the Green Cove store sells all the necessary fishing licenses and permits.
Little River Outfitters in Townsend, Tennessee, (423) 448-9459, is one of the best Southern fly shops. It has all locally-tied flies and sells regional patterns such as the Thunderhead (a Smoky Mountains Wulff fly) and the soft-hackle Tellico Nymphs.
The Hiwassee Angler in Benton, Tennessee, (423) 338-6263, is on the Hiwassee River tailwater on U.S. 411, about an hour away.
