Intro | Russ Peak Loop Knot | Tapered-end Loop | Braided Loop | Nail Knot Loop
Developed years ago by notable West Coast rod builder Russ Peak, this method produces a loop of maximum strength and minimum bulk, but it takes some time to create. Start by soaking the last 2 inches of fly line in fingernail polish remover (acetone) to soften the coating and make the next step easier.
Many anglers consider fly-line loops to be the best way to attach the leader to the fly line and fly line to backing. Loop-to-loop connections allow you to quickly change your leader or fly line.

Step #1. Using a new double-edged razor blade (they are thinner and much sharper than single-edged blades), cut a taper on the end of the fly line.

Step #2. Fold the line back on itself as shown, forming a tapered "ramp," and glue, pinching together as with the Russ Peak variation.

Step #3. Once the glue has set, start to the rear of the "ramp" and begin wrapping forward. Hold the fly line between your hands and spin the bobbin around the line. Make sure you wrap up the ramp. Done in this manner, the thread will climb up the taper. Finish by inserting a mono loop as previously described.

Step #4. The finished loop. This method is fairly quick and easy. It takes advantage of the compressibility of the fly-line coating and doesn't slip. Because of the smooth taper, this method is suitable for both front and rear loops. I make a large loop for the rear and a small one for the front so I can confirm immediately which end to attach the backing to when the line is stored off the reel.
