Lake Dillon & The Blue River

Colorado Hogs | Reudi Reservoir & Frying Pan River | Lake Dillon & The Blue River | Taylor Reservoir & River | Mysis Tactics | Leaders & Tackle | Mysis Relicta | Fly Shops

Tom Hayward Photo
The biggest trout in the Blue River are in downtown Silverthorne.

The least famous of the three tailwaters is the Blue River below Lake Dillon at Silverthorne. It's also the least appealing. The Blue's Mysis section flows through the heart of Silverthorne and a large development of factory discount stores. Nowhere else can you try for 10-pound fish while your companion or family members shop within casting distance. Also, Interstate 70 crosses the river just above a convenience store within sight of the river, and the sidewalks along the river often hold an audience watching your every move.

The Blue is difficult to wade because of the bowling-ball-shaped rocks scattered throughout. Those rocks, however, create nice holding water for large rainbows, browns, and the occasional brookie. The Blue's water runs cold and clear like most tailwaters, but the substrate is dark, making it difficult to see fish. It is best to spot trout from the bank before fishing the water. Polarized sunglasses are a must and can help you locate fish. If you are not careful and don't approach the fish with stealth, you will find that they have no problem moving upstream to the few hundred yards of "off limits" water at the base of the dam.

The Blue is open to fishing year-round and the factory outlets and road pull-offs provide ample parking.
