Travel Tips
Intro | Catch-and-Release | Marlin | Other Species | Tackle | Travel Tips

Mexico is perhaps the most foreign culture in all of Latin America. If part of your reason for going fishing is to experience something different, Cabo is a good, safe place to visit. It's nearby, relatively inexpensive (compared with a trip to Alaska or New Zealand), and your chances of catching one or more saltwater species on a fly are excellent.

Another benefit in fishing Cabo is the definitive differences in culture. There's the language (Spanish), the food (original Mexican wonders), and the culture (strolling musicians, bright clothing, and acres of gift shops).

Terry and Wendy Gunn Photo
Yellowfin Tuna (above) can weigh as much as 300 pounds. To take some species around Cabo San Lucas on a fly rod, you must look for fish that are small enough to land. Large specimens of blue marlin, black marlin, and yellowfin tuna are simply impossible to land using IFGA-legal fly tackle.

Several airlines service Cabo San Lucas. Any travel agent can make arrangements for you or your group. Flying time is refreshingly short from any city in the southwestern U.S. It seems like you just get settled in your seat and they're announcing your arrival time. It's one of the real advantages of fishing Cabo--you can get there without losing a day or two in travel. It's ideal for people with busy schedules.

Baja Anglers (1-888-588-3446) is the only full-service fly shop in Cabo San Lucas. They operate a full fly-fishing guide service as well, with comfortable boats and English-speaking captains. They can arrange accomodations for visiting anglers. There are many, many other charter services that can be hired right off the docks at Cabo as well, and some of these operations have experience with fly anglers. As far as we know, none of these fishing vessels caters exclusively to fly fishers.

Terry Gunn is an experienced outfitter/guide with operations on the Colorado River in Arizona. He holds several saltwater records with a fly rod. His wife Wendy is pictured on many of these pages, and is also a world record holder with a fly rod.
Dennis Bitton is a freelance writer in Idaho who enjoys fishing with the Gunns, or any number of additional friends, whenever and wherever he can. He has a particular fascination with fish and people in South America.
