Weapons of Bass Production
Weapons of Bass Production with Landon Mayer and John Barr, Mad Trout Media, madtroutmedia.com, 60 minutes, $29.95.

Landon Mayer (How to Catch the Biggest Trout of Your Life) and John Barr (Barr Flies) chase trophy smallmouth and largemouth bass from Texas to Colorado in this 60-minute instructional DVD.

Footage includes gear selection, bass behavior, timing, presentation and retrieves, tips for fighting fish, and top bass-producing patterns. Catching big bass is big fun and there’s no shortage of it when Barr and Mayer get together on the water.

GEAR
Carbon Flybox Co.
This is not your grandpa’s fly box. The C1 Carbon Flybox ($64.99) is built from a stiff, strong, and lightweight graphite composite with stainless steel hinges.Neodymium magnets keep your flies safely contained. The C1 is 3.5”x5.5”x1.5” and houses upwards of 200 flies--depending on size. For more information, see carbonflybox.com .

RIO
Reo says its new Selective Trout II ($64.95) line is best for technical fishing conditions, accurate casts, and delicate presentations using bamboo and soft-action fly rods. The line is availablein weight-forwardor double-taper profiles. The weight-forward has a longer front taper for light presentations and an extended rear taper for easier roll casting and mending. The double-taper version has increased weight slightly behind the front taper to help turn over longer leaders. Both versions combine RIO’s Extreme Slickness Technology and AgentX floatation coatings. Lines are available in subtle olive and chartreuse.

RIO’s new Extreme Tippet ($8.95) is made from black, braided Dyneema--a light and strong polyethylene fiber. The material does not stretch, making it more sensitive than monofilaments, and RIO says its strength-to-diameter ratio is twice that of typical nylon and fluorocarbon tippet. Dyneema floats and is resistant to moisture, abrasion, UV light, and chemicals. Available in sizes 2X through 5X. For more information, see rioproducts.com .

Kaenon Polarized
Kaenon’s Kabin sunglasses ($199) combine sleek, traditional styling and a universal fit for both men’s and women’s face shapes. Frames are available in tortoise or black and have gripping nose pads buried in the bridge to anchor them to your face. Kabins have SR-91 polarized lenses--available in gray, copper, and yellow. Prescription lenses are available. For more information, see kaenon.com .

Cortland
Cortland’s Precision Platinum ($65) floating trout line was developed for a wide range of difficult fishing situations, from large rivers and tailwaters to spring creeks and small streams.

The line has a modified Rocket2 taper with a longer head, extended rear taper, and oversized running line so it loads quickly for short, accurate casts--even with fast-action fly rods--but the longer head allows you to carry more line in the air for long casts, roll casting, or mending at long distances.

The line has Cortland’s Dyna-Tip--a 3-foot, high-vis white tip section which Cortland says floats higher than other fly lines. The rest of the line is moss green.

The entire line is coated with DuraSlik, which Cortland says significantly reduces surface friction for quiet casting, faster shooting, higher line speeds, and longer casts. Precision Platinum lines have low-memory braided nylon cores and are available for line weights 3 through 8.

Cortland’s new Brook fly rod series ($179.95) is deigned to meet the demands of smaller waters where accuracy and finesse are more important than power--think light tippets, tiny dry flies, and wary trout. The medium-fast rods are made from high-modulus graphite and are finished in an amber-pearl color. Brook rods come with nickel silver fittings, a slim Western-style cork grip, and a rod/reel case. Rods are available in 3- through 5-weight and in lengths from 6’6” to 8’6”. For more information, see cortlandline.com .
