Little Green Machine
The Little Green Machine started as a Baetis imitation but by tying it with olive, light olive, chartreuse, black, Pheasant Tail, rust, or gray microtubing , this fly can match any Blue-winged Olive, Pale Morning Dun, or Callibaetis hatch. This fly is also extremely productive fished just below the surface during a trico hatch or spinner fall.

1. Begin tying the Little Green Machine by tying in a few Pheasant Tail fibers for the tail at the halfway point of the hook shank, leaving room for the thorax. I have found that by tying in a tail that is a bit larger, this fly produces better than tying in a sparse tail. Try four or five fibers on #18 flies and add fibers as you increase in size.

2. Tie in Lagartun extra-fine gold wire for the rib, and tie in one or two strands of Fire-Fly #5 for the flashback.

3. Use the same tapering technique as described with the dry flies. Wrap the microtubing forward one wrap past the tie in point and secure it. Now pull the Fire-Fly forward, making sure to keep it straight down the back, and secure this with a couple of turns of thread. Do not trim the Fire-Fly at this time because you will be using it to make the split wingcase as well. Wrap the rib forward over the flashback material. Pull the Fire-Fly backward and make a few turns of thread to secure it in position at the back of the thorax.

For the wings/gills of this fly, I use white Antron or Z-lon tied in at about the halfway point of the thorax. Depending on the size of the fly, split the yarn fibers in half or even less for a single wing. When in doubt, whether it is dubbing or wings, less is better.

David Siegfried Photo
Use Peacock Ice Dubbing to make figure-eight wraps around the split, spent wing material. After you have finished dubbing the thorax, pull the Fire-Fly over down the middle of the thorax to form the wing case. Finish the fly with a few whip finishes and you are ready for a day of fun on the water.
