Yarns left to right: Knitting yarn, egg, mohair, rug yarn, poly, micro yarn.
Yarns have been used as fly bodies for a number of years. Acrylic and polyester knitting yarns are frequently used as wrapped bodies on streamers, stonefly nymphs, and hopper patterns. These are usually twisted three-strand yarns that can be untwisted so a single strand can be used. They have also been used as shell backs and wing cases on nymphs. Antron, Z-lon, Hi-Vis and polypropylene yarns come as a single strand or loose clumps.

Egg Yarn. Egg yarn is a fluffy single strand yarn. It has very fine fibers and is commonly flared on a hook to form Glo Bugs. It is also used as a bright indicator on terrestrial patterns and as a tail on Woolly Worms. Its thin fibers make excellent fine dubbing and can be used in place of sheep fleece on wool-head flies.

Mohair/Leech Yarn. This is a very shaggy, buggy looking material. It is used for Mohair Leeches, streamers, and big nymphs. The long fibers on it will stand out better if it is combed out with a dubbing teaser after you tie it on.

Rug Yarn. This coarse yarn is sometimes marketed as Sparkle Yarn and is the material to use for yarn style crabs. To do this, tie the yarn across the hook like a spinner wing about five times and then comb it out and trim to the size and shape of a dime or nickel. It can be blended to make a seal dubbing substitute.

Polypropylene. This yarn gained popularity as a dry-fly material since it is lighter than water. It is frequently used as parachute wings and hopper bodies.

Micro Yarns. These super-fine yarns are good for the tier who prefers not to dub bodies. Uni Products and Rainy's both market this product.

Assorted uses for Antron and Z-lon.

Antron, Z-lon, Para Post, Darlon and Hi-Vis. These are similar fibers with similar purposes. Antron is a nylon fiber with triangular-shaped filaments. This causes it to hold air bubbles. Gary LaFontaine used it to tie many of his patterns. He swears by it and did a fair amount of underwater work to research its appearance.

Z-lon, Para Post, Darlon and Hi-Vis have a similar translucent look to them. All of these materials can be used as wings, shucks and overbodies (LaFontaine's Sparkle Caddis Emergers). They make an excellent floss substitute, which won't change color when it gets wet. You can make a good segmented nymph body by twisting them and then wrapping (Serendipity). Hi-Vis and Para Post have a waterproof treatment.
