Markers and paint are great for modifying or creating color in our flies. Permanent markers are used to add stripes, make a wing pattern, color foam and make match- the-hatch flies for fresh and saltwater. Standard permanent markers work for basic colors, but for a bigger color range, permanent art markers are better.

Paint is used primarily for poppers and for painting eyes. Model paint is a good choice because the small bottles are handy, and models are painted more colors than houses are.

Fly tying oriented water base paints are now sold and Rainy's has the largest choice. They have the same attributes as water base cements, but they seem to function better at this purpose.

Flexible jig paints are good for covering beadheads and coneheads. Some are made of vinyl and a new paint by Components Inc. is a heat paint. Put your bead on the hook, heat it with a flame and dip it in the powder paint. When you pull it out you have finished color bead.

Lure dips made to tint bass lures can be used to make colored coneheads, and rubber worm dyes will tint most of the plastic body materials.

I also like to use paint pens because you don't have to deal with cleaning paint brushes.

Machine washable T-shirt paint works great for putting indicator dots on flies like ants and beetles. A heat expanding series of T-shirt paints is made. Phillip Grim, an innovative young tier, uses the puff paint to make ants. He squeezes drops of the paint onto dental floss and after it cures, he heats it up. The paint drops will fluff up to a nice ant shape and the expanded material is basically a closed cell foam.
