Rubber Legs
Rubber legs give action to wet and dry flies. They
got their start is bass bugs, but now it is hard to find
a trout fly without them. This product came from the
clothing industry. It is the "stretchy stuff" in elastic
waistbands. The most common style is what is called
round rubber and will come as a sheet of rubber strands.
The medium size in this product is made in many colors.
The small and large sizes usually come in white, black,
and natural cream. World Specialties sells Mini Rubber
Legs in numerous colors that are good on small flies
down to size 18.
Silicone rubber legs are silicone sheets that have
been cut into strands and were originally used as bass
jig skirts. They are usually translucent with glitter
mixed in and are extremely popular for bonefish and
permit flies. They are also sold in a striped version
called Zebra Legs (Dan Bailey's) and Grizzly Leggs
(Spirit River). They are more flexible than round rubber
legs but not as durable.
Angler's Choice Bodez N Legz looks like silicone legs
but is much more durable and naturally buoyant. However,
it is stiffer than most of the other rubbers.
Spandex is a soft but tough rubber leg material. It
is sold as Super Floss, Spanflex, Flexi Floss and Spider
Legs. It is the most flexible of the rubber legs and
will absorb some water. It can be used as legs,
wingcases and as a floss that won't change color when
wet.
