Reviews for 2006 vises are in bold.

Reviewed by Hans Weilenmann

If the Caterpillar company were ever to design a vise it would likely look like the DynaKing Professional. This vise looks all business!

The DynaKing Professional has been on the market, unchanged as far as I can tell, since the mid-eighties. Machined fully out of stainless steel, this is a traditionally styled rotary push collet vise. The jaws are operated by a sturdy lever, and the adjustment for the various hook sizes is made by turning a robust collet ring situated just back of the jaws. When clamping down on a hook the lever locks into place with a confidence inspiring "clunk" as the small notch in the cam engages.

The jaws themselves have a small flat area near the tip for smaller hooks, and two straight grooves which assist in holding large hooks securely. The DynaKing jaws and cam system, used across all models, has proven to work very reliably for many years.

The standard jaws have a fairly blunt tip. For tying on small hooks the user may want to invest in an optional set of midge jaws.

Loosening a knurled knob located on the housing unlocks the barrel for 360 degrees rotation. Rotary performance is very smooth. The angle of the jaws assembly can be set from horizontal to a number of steep angle increments. The jaw angle is mechanically locked by means of slots, rather than by friction control, and secured by a second knurled knob located near the bottom of the housing.

The aluminum C-clamp is a quite robust affair, and opens up to a fairly generous 2½".

A small complaint is that the stainless steel screw which locks onto the stem threads into the bare aluminum of the C-clamp, where a collar insert would be a preferable solution. The same applies to the opening where the stem runs through the C-clamp.

Verdict:

The DynaKing Professional ($299) is a well designed, tried and tested, class-act vise. It is a full rotary, but not a true rotary like the DynaKing Barracuda from the same stable.

It is a good choice for a tier in the market for a mid/high end traditional styled vise. It does, however, face stiff competition from the HMH Standard which sells for substantially less. As such, any recommendation of this vise has to be a qualified one.
