Notes on tying a Flashy Profile Fly

MATERIALS

Hook: #1/0-8/0 Gamakatsu SS15, Octopus or Trey Combs.
Weedguard: No.6 (.016) single strand wire (Optional).
Weighting: 3 Amp fuse wire or .028 lead wire.
Primary body: Bestway Crinkle nylon and Superhair.
Flash: Bestway saltwater Flash, dyed pearl Flashabou; 1/32" holographic mylar,Krystal Flash, Angel Hair on smaller ALF patterns. Alternate flash for back and top of fly: Bronze Flashabou and black Krystal Flash.
Gills: Red Fish Hair.
Head: Tying thread.
Eyes: Witchcraft prismatic stick-on: 3mm to 10mm depending on fly size. Silver iris, black pupil, or similar.
Alternate flash for back and top of fly: Bronze Flashabou and black Krystal Flash.

All materials are tied in and folded, using a high and low tying procedure. This is an old method where material is tied in only on the top and underside of the hook shank. Nothing on the sides. This produces a flat fly with a deep dorsal/ventral profile.

Each layer is measured for length, in accordance with how you want the fly to look for intended application, and laid on the hook, secured with a couple of wraps, folded over and secured again. Nothing difficult, as long as form and balance are maintained and you have some idea of what you want the completed fly to look like.

If the material is tied and cut off and held together with epoxy, you are not tying an ALF or FPF. The synthetic material does not compress so the folding keeps the material where it belongs instead of pulling out. The deep profile is achieved by layering above and below, keeping the front view thin and the side view as deep or narrow as needed.

1. For tandem rigs: Secure chosen hooks at the desired length using multi-strand nylon coated wire, crimp with sleeve close to front hook after passing through eye of front hook and back through back hook eye then fold again.

2. Common sense should tell you that for short flies of 3 to 8 inches overall (singles or small tandems), you can start tying on the front hook. Long and larger flies will need to be started on wire somewhere between front and back hooks. This all depends on the length of the tandem and how long the nylon belly will be and the length of the flash tail. A 16-inch fly only needs belly material l2-inches long overall, the rest should be flash.

To form a deep, thin body, apply successive material bunches atop each other in six to eight-strand clumps for smaller flies and larger clumps for bigger Flash Profile Flies. Wrap crinkle nylon on the top of the hook shank at mid-clump, with the rear ends extending belly length past hook bend.

3. Fold the strands hanging at the front of the fly back and tie it down on top of itself. Lift and trim unevenly so the material has graduated lengths and does not get that "hacked off" paint brush appearance. For smaller or larger flies everything is relative.

4. Should you need extra material to fill in the belly, now is the time to tie in material that will fill in the sides by laying the nylon on the side of the hook ahead of the crimp/sleeve.

5. Take a couple of wraps and crossover the top of hook and down the other side. Secure with a couple of wraps. Repeating this on top of the hook and underneath will fill in the belly portion.

6. Flashy profile is next, using whatever flash you prefer. We use Pearl Flashabou or Heavy Saltwater Flash, in large clumps with uneven ends and folded after initial tie-in. Big flies require three sections of flash, holographic mylar should be added over the last section and allowed to veil or halo a flashy profile.

7. Tie in some belly material if needed. Start completing the top of the fly by tying in sections of nylon, folding, then tying again. Superhair works nicely when combined with crinkle nylon on large flies. Smaller flies tie well with just Superhair. Pearl Flashabou also works and is available in many colors. Holographic mylar will give all the flash needed. The iridescent flash that fish give off from their scales can be duplicated with pearl Flashabou and holographic mylar, no other material is required. Holographic Flashabou is also very handy for top line or lateral lines. Mylar eyes will work well. We use C-A Glue (super glue) with kicker spray (accelerator), and coat the head material with extra thick head cement to set. There is a nice balance when material amounts are correct.

This is not rocket science, so don't over think it! A nice balance can be achieved when material amounts are correct. Remember that when using high and low tying and folding material, you can achieve tremendous proportions and still maintain balance.
