How to Tie Better Deer-hair Flies, by Christopher Helm
Turck's Tarantula

1. Cover the bare hook shank in front of the body with 50- or 70-denier GSP thread and finish with the thread tucked against the body. Depending on hook size, take between one half of a pencil’s width and one pencil’s width of early-season, short 3/4" to 1" hair for the head. Comb out the underfur and stack the hair. Slide the hair over the head area so the tips are no more than half the length of the body. The collar is very short on this pattern.

2. Holding the hair with your right hand, align the tips with the center of the hook or just slightly shorter.

3. Without moving the thread forward, lay a piece of round rubber over the thread and draw it into the hair. Repeat this process on the far side of the hook. Bring the thread from under the flared hair and make three thread wraps followed by a half-hitch.

4. Holding the hair in the same position, switch the hair to your left hand. Cut the hair immediately in front of the hook eye.

5. Take half a pencil’s width of hair or a smaller amount suitable for the amount of hook shank remaining. Hold the hair at a 45-degree angle, make three thread wraps, and spin the hair around the hook. Bring the thread from underneath the spun hair and make several wraps. Whip-finish the head with a half-hitch tool.

6. Make three thread wraps around the hair and flare it with firm thread pressure.

7. Trim the head to taper toward the hook eye. Finish smoothing the hair with a double-edged razor blade. Cut the rubber legs so that each leg is equal to the body of the fly.
