How to Tie Better Deer-hair Flies, by Christopher Helm

1. Attach 50- or 70-denier GSP thread for the head of the fly. Cover the bare hook shank with thread and finish with the thread against the body.
2. Cut one pencil-size clump of early season whitetail or mule-deer hair about 1" long. Comb out the underfur and stack the hair. Push the hair over the head area so the tips are between the middle of the shank and the hook point.
3. Cut the butts of the hair as close to the hook eye as possible. Make three thread wraps around the clump of hair.
4. Flare the hair with firm pressure on the thread. Bring the thread from under the hair and make two thread wraps in front of the flared clump.
5. Take another pencil-size clump of hair and spin it in front of the first clump. Move the thread forward, maintaining strong thread pressure. Make five or six thread wraps and tie off with a whip-finish or half-hitch tool.
6. Trim the hair to a bullet shape.
