Why Tube Flies? | Tubes for Tube Flies | Fishing Tube Flies | Tying the Egg Suckin' Leech

Egg Suckin' Leech
David Siegfried Photo

Tube: 1/2 to 1 1/2 inch long metal or plastic tube.
Tail: Purple rabbit Zonker strip.
Body: Purple crosscut rabbit strip, palmered.
Head: Egg yarn.

Select a tube of appropriate length and weight. Pierce a 1/8" piece of 1/8" vinyl tubing through both sides, thread it on the mandrel, then slide the tube on. This vinyl buffer helps hold the tube in place and keeps the thread from slipping off the front of the tube.

Coat the tube with Zap-A-Gap. Wrap a thread base from front to rear, stopping 3/16" from the rear of the tube.

Attach a rabbit Zonker-strip tail and put one drop of Zap-A-Gap over the wraps. You may add two strands of red, gold, or silver Holographic Flashabou.

Attach a strip of crosscut rabbit ahead of the tail. Coat the tube with Zap-A-Gap and wrap the fur strip forward. The glue prevents the strip from stretching and then falling off when the fly gets wet. With Zap-A-Gap you only have one chance to wrap it correctly.

Lay the Egg Yarn parallel to the hook shank and take two tight turns around the bundle of yarn and the hook shank. Pull up on both pieces of yarn and clip them close to the base. The yarn will fan out into an egg shape. Apply Zap-A-Gap to the finished head of the fly.
