Redfish Comeback

Of only marginal food value, redfish are one of three year-round resident species that live in most of the bays around Florida. For years they were overlooked as a sportfish as anglers sought the more edible snook and spotted trout.

Then in the mid-'70s, New Orleans chef and book author Paul Prudhomme touted blackened redfish as gourmet food, creating a human feeding frenzy, and the commercial netters caught redfish nearly to extinction.

At the time there were no regulations on who could catch how many, but as the redfish began to disappear, Florida's Marine Fisheries Commission recognized there was a problem and in 1984 declared them a sportfish, which meant they could not be sold. Since then, redfish have made a comeback to pre-netting days and have become one of the premier inshore sportfishing species in the state.

Florida has some of the best year-round redfish fishing anywhere. The state's 1,800 miles of coastline is interspersed with beaches, salt marshes, grass beds, mangroves, flats, and estuaries that redfish call home. These areas provide ample food for the fish, as well as interesting venues for fly casters.

When on the bite, redfish will eat almost anything you throw at them, but they prefer the many different species of shrimp, crabs, and other crustaceans they can find in the fertile near-shore areas. With their mouths positioned at the bottom of their heads, they do most of their feeding on bottom.
