Alaska: Mines Over (What) Matters
Alaskans voted Tuesday, Aug. 26, against increased protection for clean water and streams in favor of future large-scale mine developments, such as the proposed Pebble project in the Bristol Bay headwaters.
A majority win for Ballot Measure 4 would have imposed two water quality standards on any new large-scale mines in Alaska, restricting them from releasing toxic pollutants into water that would adversely affect the health of humans or salmon.
With more than 84 percent of votes tallied early Wednesday, the measure was defeated with more than 57 percent of voters rejecting it, according to the Associated Press.
The initiative was largely aimed at fighting the proposed Pebble mine, which hopes to tap into lucrative copper and gold deposits buried beneath one of the largest sockeye salmon rearing grounds in the world.
Despite the measure's defeat, Pebble must still receive multiple state permits before it is developed. The Bristol Bay commercial fishery contributes more than $200 million annually to Alaska's economy.
